Low Back Pain? Consumer Reports Survey Supports PT as an Effective Treatment.

Physical therapy ranks among the top treatment choices of the Consumer Reports readers with back pain, according to a new Consumer Reports survey of more than 14,000 Americans who experience the condition.

About 80 percent of U.S. adults have at some point been bothered by back pain. More than half said pain severely limited their daily routine for a week or longer, and 88 percent said it recurred through the year. Many said the pain interfered with sleep, sex, and efforts to maintain a healthy weight.

Back pain can be tough to treat. Most of the Consumer Reports survey respondents tried five or six different treatments. They rated the helpfulness of the treatments tried and their satisfaction with the health-care professionals visited. Hands-on therapies were among the top-rated.

The report also recommends manual therapy (spinal manipulation) and exercise for low back pain. Physical therapists perform both of these types of treatments regularly. In fact, many of the studies supporting spinal manipulation and exercise for low back pain have been published by physical therapists.

More and more studies are showing that physical therapy is a great first choice treatment for low back pain.  Here are just a few:

  1. Physical Therapy for Degenerative Disc Disease
  2. Physical Therapy Exercises For Low Back Pain
  3. Predicting patients that will benefit from spinal manipulation by a physical therapist
